This photo was taken in Marrakech near the ancient Olive Grove that we visited.
Camels have been used as work animals for many centuries, being used to carry supplies, and people, across the desert and through towns. As motor vehicles were introduced, animals such as horses and camels that used to be a necessary part of the transportation process faded from use. Part of the tourist expectation when they come to the desert is to see camels; however, Morocco draws its tourist interests in the larger cities, and so tourists most often do not have a chance to travel to the desert to experience that particular aspect of Morocco. By keeping camels in the city, it feeds the tourist expectation while allowing them to more easily experience different aspects of Moroccan culture. While Morocco has moved ahead in many ways in both technology and cost-effective transport, the presence of the camels shows the connection between the old and the new in Morocco.
