The old Medina in Fes was established in 1274 and is an area in the city that is a car free zone. The part of the city is dedicated to local eateries and vendors who sell goods that are made right in the Medina and also items that are brought in. The main and only mode of transportation in the Medina is by means of mules carrying the items in. The Medina in Fes is also famous for many other things including but not limited to the largest leather producers in the area, hand made rugs and metal goods that are produced by hand inside the medina walls. The leather in the medina is dyed in a certain section on the medina that has been used for hundreds of years in the same location. In the rug store they say that each rug is hand stitched and can take over a year to produce only one rug. The metal goods are all hand shaped and molded by the craftsmen in same building dedicated to the production of these objects.
